CIS 313 Networking and Telecommunications

The objective of this course was to learn the basics of telecommunications and data communications. Course work included learning LAN and WAN components such as switches, routers, telecommunication circuits, and protocols and demonstrating the knowledge by developing a network. Additional topics covered included information security, information assurance and advanced networking technologies.

CIS 317 Introduction to Databases_

This course is specially designed to present the fundamentals of database management and data organization.  This includes the principles and methodologies  of database design, database application development, normalization, referential integrity, security, relational database models, database implementation, and database languages.  It gives the history about how the DBMS (Database management system) has evolved from old file system, about their importance in managing the large bodies of data, what database model can be used to implement them, what relational languages are used to provide the interface for DBMS, and also covers how the data are actually organized in the abstarct data structures.

MMI 403 Introduction to Medical Informatics

This course is a survey of fundamental concepts and activities on information technology as applied to health care. MMI 405 Healthcare Information Technology Integration, Interoperability and Standards

The objective of the course was to learn details of healthcare information technology standards and interoperability. The course reviewed health information models and IHE Initiatives, HL7, DICOM, CCOW standards, as well as the role of non-medical standards in medical informatics (HTTP, XML, etc.). Addional topics included multi-institutional issues and telemedicine, e-commerce, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards compliance and value proposition of standards.

MMI 406 Decision Support Systems and Healthcare

This course provides a practical survey and examination of clinical decision support systems over the past 20 years, along with how to apply the science of decision analysis with an emphasis on medical decision-making.  This course also provides the foundation needed to apply clinical decision support in real-world patient care and clinical research settings.  Students become familiar with the basic requirements for decision support systems, the graphical display of medical information to enhance decision-making, the application of rule-based systems, Controlled Medical Terminologies, coding and structured data entry, and data mining techniques.

MMI 407 Legal, Ethical and Social Issues in Medical Informatics

This course addresses the legal, ethical, and social issues in health care informatics and will equip students with the knowledge and analytic tools needed to spot those key issues, thereby better protecting students and their employers in the medical informatics field. The health care industry is highly regulated, and this course also covers regulatory informatics requirements as they apply to work with health care data and information management systems. The course also covers topics such as privacy and security, fraud and abuse, confidentiality, antitrust law, intellectual property, the Joint Commission, disclosure, and compliance programs.

MMI 409 Biostatistics and Medical Informatics
